Farrow Legacy Gift Facilitates PICU Expansion

Through the establishment of a charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT), the estate of J. Willard Farrow recently directed $353,000 to support the expansion and renovation of the Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Goryeb Children’s Hospital. This legacy gift, made as part of the Growing Forward Campaign, was based upon arrangements Farrow made in the 1930s for part of his estate to help build programs at local hospitals.

Legacy gifts are a critical part of enhancing facilities, programs and research, and meeting the needs of patients at Morristown Medical Center.

“Many people don’t know that by adding a CRUT to your estate portfolio, you can get a very nice tax deduction, acquire additional income every month and set aside money for your favorite charity,” said Cynthia W. O’Donnell, JD, director of gift planning for the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center. “It’s a beneficial situation for everyone.”

The Joan and Edward Foley PICU, which opened on the second floor of Goryeb Children’s Hospital in September 2019, was expanded to 13,200 square feet, nearly twice the size of the former PICU. The unit also grew from nine to 15 spacious rooms, single-bed suites with a private bathroom and sleeping accommodations for parents. The new PICU also boasts a large lounge and dedicated pharmacy.

More importantly, the renovation and expansion of the PICU has meant that more space is available to treat highly specialized cases involving infants, children and adolescents with life-threatening illness or injury. The new, modern unit allows for the continuous monitoring of patients’ respiratory, cardiac and neurological functions.
